The Story
In 2014, my life was a blend of transitions newly married, blending families, and learning to navigate the beauty and challenges that came with it. Even as one chapter of my life closed, the bonds I built with the children from my past relationship remained strong. A new family was forming, but the love, connection, and sense of community that surrounded me never left.
From those experiences, It Takes a Village was born.
Before I became a full time entrepreneur, I worked for the Department of Developmental Services, supporting individuals with intellectual, behavioral, and developmental disabilities. Even then, I found myself creating programs, group experiences, and moments of joy for the people I served. I didn't realize it at the time, but I was already walking in my purpose. People called me "the nurturer," and that name still fits me today.
Life, however, had its own lessons. After years of emotional challenges, postpartum depression, and workplace stress, I reached a turning point in 2018. I made the decision to walk away from my marriage, my job, and everything that no longer aligned with who I was becoming.
I prayed and asked God:
"If You help me through this storm, I promise to help someone else make it through theirs."
And He answered.
With what little I had, I turned my home into a safe haven where children could grow, learn, and feel loved. That was the birth of It Takes a Village Home Daycare. What began as a small in-home daycare grew into a holistic childcare center focused on supporting children with developmental and behavioral challenges.
These children found me, and I found my purpose in them.
Leaving my state job didn't mean leaving behind the population I loved. It meant expanding how I served them. For the past seven years, I've nurtured children who were often turned away because their needs were "too complex." I've walked alongside parents, helping them find balance, resources, and peace in their journey. Together, we've built something far greater than a childcare program. We've built a village.
Today, as we step into a new season of growth and expansion, I carry with me every lesson, every tear, every prayer, and every victory that shaped It Takes a Village.
This blog, Our Village, Our Story, will be a space where I share my lived, learned, and explored experiences, stories of faith, resilience, motherhood, community, and love. My hope is to inspire others to keep building, keep believing, and keep nurturing the light within themselves and those around them.
With love and gratitude,
Tamika Keith
